Job Description

The City of Guelph is looking for hardworking, motivated team players to work in various departments in Environmental Services during the summer months. The City of Guelph is now accepting applications from candidates who are interested in applying for positions in Environmental Services including:

  • Customer Service and Site Maintenance Attendant
  • Water Services Labourers
  • Water Services Facility / Grounds Maintenance Assistants
  • Wastewater Labourers

General Information about our Environmental Services General Labourer

  • Most begin April/May and finish at the end of August/beginning of September. However, there are a few positions that continue until the end of October
  • Positions will work up to 40 hours per week. Some positions include shift and weekends
  • All positions require a commitment to providing our community and teams with exceptional customer service

Please note:

  • Successful candidates must provide a current driver’s abstract before their start date. This confirms their licence is held in good standing, and that it has not been suspended or revoked under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) or Criminal Code of Canada in the last 5 years.
  • Successful candidates who will be required to drive a City vehicle as part of their duties, will be required to participate in a mandatory driver training and testing session prior to their start date. The City of Guelph will take into consideration the number of demerit points and/or nature of the infractions to determine if it meets our requirements.

  • Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education in the Environmental field is an asset.
  • Valid G or G2 Driver’s licence and a minimum of 2 years driving experience for positions that are required to drive a City vehicle
  • A valid Emergency First Aid and CPR
  • Ability to work with various small tools and equipment
  • Ability to perform physical work and in all types of weather
  • Comply with all applicable regulations and requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, as well as all Federal, Provincial, and City of Guelph regulations, policies and procedures
  • Ability to work with or without supervision
  • Strong focus on quality customer service
  • Demonstration of community mindedness through volunteering, community outreach and other initiatives is an asset
  • Experience in landscaping, construction, farming or other related experience is an asset

Position Descriptions

Customer Service and Site Maintenance Attendant

These positions will require performing site maintenance and assisting at the hazardous waste depot. This position will also require excellent customer service skills when dealing with members of the public.

These positions are responsible for duties related, but not limited to:

 

  • Performing lawn maintenance and litter clean-up at the Waste Resource Innovation Centre
  • Picking up missed waste throughout the City based on calls from the public
  • Meeting and greeting customers at the public drop-off and assisting with their waste disposal needs

 

Water Services Facility / Grounds Maintenance Assistants

These positions will assist the Water Services Maintenance team in the upkeep of the Water Services facilities.

These positions are responsible for duties related, but not limited to:

 

  • Performing ground maintenance duties related to grounds keeping; including litter/garbage control, general landscaping and landscape care, general house cleaning and painting
  • Operate assigned equipment
  • Entering maintenance tasks into the database system
  • Ensuring inventory levels are monitored and maintained

 

Wastewater Services Facility/Grounds Maintenance Assistants

These positions will assist the Wastewater Services Maintenance team in the upkeep of the Wastewater Services facilities.

These positions are responsible for duties related, but not limited to:

 

  • Performing general ground and facility maintenance duties related to grounds keeping; including litter/garbage control, general house cleaning and painting
  • Operate assigned equipment

 

Wastewater Collections Labourer

This position will assist the Wastewater Services Collection team in the maintenance of the sanitary sewer system.

These positions are responsible for duties related, but not limited to:

 

  • Assists with duties related to sanitary sewer maintenance
  • Assists with duties related to sanitary pumping station maintenance
  • Perform duties within the right of way and near traffic

 

The successful candidate will be required to provide the City with an acceptable Police Record Check.

Wastewater Services Treatment Labourer

This position will assist the Wastewater Services Treatment team in the general maintenance and operation of the Wastewater Services Treatment Plant.

This position is responsible for duties related, but not limited to:

 

  • Work with the Operators and perform regular maintenance duties relating to plant operation; general housekeeping of equipment, obtaining samples
  • Operate assigned equipment
  • OIT is an asset
