  • Job Description

    The City of Guelph is looking for hardworking, motivated team players to work in various departments from late summer till early winter. The City of Guelph is now accepting applications from candidates who are interested in performing general labour in following areas of the Parks department:

     

    1. Turf Maintenance
    2. Sports Fields Maintenance
    3. Horticulture
    4. Park Infrastructure
    5. Parks Sanitation 

    These positions assist with the maintenance of hundreds of hectares of parkland and open space within the City of Guelph.

     

    Successful candidates will be provided orientation training.  Full details about the training will be provided at the time of offer.

    General Information about our Parks General Labourer

    • Positions begin in July and finish between November and January
    • Positions will work up to 40 hours per week. Some positions include evenings and weekends.

    General Qualifications

    • Valid G or G2 Driver’s license and a minimum of 2 years driving experience for positions that are required to drive a City vehicle.  Successful candidates will be required to provide a current driver’s abstract prior to their start date to confirm they have a valid driver’s license held in good standing and that it has not been suspended or revoked under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) or Criminal Code of Canada in the last 5 years.  The City of Guelph will take into consideration the number of demerit points and/or nature of the infractions to determine if it meets our requirements.
    • Valid CPR and First Aid is required prior to start date.
    • Ability to work with various small tools and equipment.
    • Ability to perform physical work and in all types of weather.
    • Ability to work with or without supervision.
    • Strong team skills and have a focus on quality customer service
    • Demonstrates community mindedness through volunteering, community outreach and other initiatives is an asset.

    Position Descriptions and Job Specific Qualifications

     

    1.) Turf Maintenance Labourer

    Duties

    • This position is responsible for duties related, but not limited to turf maintenance within the City’s Parks and open spaces, including working within the Road Allowance.
    • Safe & efficient operation, care and maintenance of tools, equipment and vehicles, i.e.  grass cutting machines, trimmers , blowers , trucks, and small equipment including all auxiliary attachments
    • Perform daily circle checks on all equipment and report defects to the immediate supervisor or designate.
    • Apply safety precautions and procedures in the performance of all duties, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Transportation Act and policies of the Corporation.
    • Communicate courteously with the public and where necessary refer them to a permanent staff member. 
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Specific Qualifications

    • 6-9 months of turf related experience demonstrating basic knowledge in Turf Maintenance and the ability to operate grass cutting equipment.
    • Experience in parks or landscape maintenance is considered an asset.

    2.)Sports Field Labourer

    Duties

     

    • This position is responsible for duties related, but not limited to sports field maintenance within the City’s Parks and open spaces.
    • Familiarization with all official dimensions of playing surfaces; baseball diamonds, soccer pitches, football fields etc. as well as lining procedures and proper grooming procedures and requirements for safe playable surfaces.
    • Install, maintain and remove tennis, Monitor and clean tennis surfaces as required.
    • Awareness and fulfillment of tournament requirements and needs. Carry out assigned tasks with minimal interfere with play.
    • Ensure all surfaces are safe for daily use, and inform crew lead of unsafe conditions
    • Proper installation and maintenance of home plates, pitching points.
    • Daily cleaning of all areas; player’s benches, backstops, under bleachers etc
    • Maintain vehicles and equipment in a clean, tidy condition, making regular inspections, reporting defects to immediate supervisor.
    • 6-9 months of turf related experience demonstrating basic knowledge in Sports Field Maintenance and the ability to operate a tractor with appropriate attachments is an asset.
    • Previous experience playing or coaching team sports is considered an asset.

    3.)Horticulture Labourer

    Duties

    • This position is responsible for duties related, but not limited to the care and culture of plants, shrubs, and small trees within the Cities Parks and Open Spaces, on City owned property, including working within road allowances.
    • Safe and efficient operation, care and maintenance of tools, equipment, and vehicles (i.e. trucks, water trailer, pruning saws, pruning pole, hand tools)
    • Required to weed, water, prune, dead head, plant, woodchip and maintain beds on a scheduled basis, assist with tree and shrub maintenance, litter pick and report any hazards.
    • Perform daily circle checks on all equipment and report defects to the immediate supervisor or designate.
    • Maintain daily written records of work-related activities.
    • Apply safety precautions and procedures in the performance of all duties, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Transportation Act and policies of the Corporation.
    • Communicate courteously with the public and where necessary refer them to a permanent staff member. 
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Specific Qualifications

    • Post-secondary education in Horticulture , Urban Arboriculture and/or Landscaping is preferred.
    • Experience in Horticulture, landscaping, landscape design, urban arboriculture, greenhouse, or other related experience is an asset.

     

    4.)Parks Infrastructure Labourer

    Duties

    • This position is responsible for duties related, but not limited to the installation, maintenance and repair of furniture, park buildings, fencing, park signs, interlock repair, painting, assisting with special events, graffiti removal, etc. within the Cities Parks and Open Spaces, on City owned property, including working within road allowances.
    • Safe and efficient operation, care and maintenance of tools, equipment, and vehicles (i.e. trucks, trailers, power tools, hand tools)
    • Required to perform or assist with all aspect of maintenance and repair on Park infrastructure, litter pick and report any hazards.
    • Perform daily circle checks on all equipment and report defects to the immediate supervisor or designate.
    • Maintain daily written records of work-related activities.
    • Apply safety precautions and procedures in the performance of all duties, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Transportation Act and policies of the Corporation.
    • Communicate courteously with the public and where necessary refer them to a permanent staff member. 
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Specific Qualifications

    • Post-secondary education in Construction, Carpentry and/or Building Maintenance is preferred.
    • Experience in construction, landscaping (fencing, interlock, cement, and masonry), carpentry, plumbing, professional painting, graffiti removal or other related experience is an asset.

     

    5.)Parks Sanitation Labourer

    Duties

    • This position is responsible for duties related, but not limited to maintaining the cleanliness of Guelph’s parks and washrooms.
    • Safe and efficient operation, care, and maintenance of tools, equipment, and vehicles. For example: one-ton garbage truck, power washer, pick-up trucks, grass cutting machines, tractors, cleaning equipment and small tools.
    • Safe and efficient operation, care and maintenance of tools, equipment, tablets, and vehicles
    • emptying, cleaning and replacing liners of trash/waste receptacles
    • cleaning, dusting and disinfecting all washroom fixtures
    • Perform daily circle checks on all equipment and report defects to the immediate supervisor or designate.
    • Garbage pickup in parks, and litter picking  
    • Maintain daily written records of work-related activities.
    • Apply safety precautions and procedures in the performance of all duties, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Transportation Act and policies of the Corporation.
    • Communicate courteously with the public and where necessary refer them to a permanent staff member.
    • Assist other members of the parks team during vacation/sickness and other peak workload periods
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Specific Qualifications

    • Post-secondary education in Parks or Environmental field is preferred.
    • Tree and shrub identification skills are an asset.
    • Previous cleaning experience is considered an asset.
    • Experience in landscaping, farming, or other related experience is an asset.

    Rate of pay

    $14.00 per hour
