Position Overview

Oversee the learn to swim, recreational swim, and user group programming in accordance to the governing body Lifesaving Society standards and the City of Guelph expectations. Maintain and enforce high safety standards at all times. Guided by the goals and objectives of the City of Guelph Strategic Plan and committed to the Corporate Values of integrity, excellence and wellness, the candidate will aid in the achievement of the Community Vision – to be the city that makes a difference.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Assist in planning, organizing, and ensuring the delivery of swim lessons and drop-in programs that meet the standards of the Lifesaving Society as set out by the City of Guelph and the needs of the community.
  • Ensure effective delivery, planning supervision and evaluation of programs and services.
  • Assist with swim instruction, lifeguarding and monitoring of all aquatic programs and activities.
  • Assist with the development and delivery of staff training.
  • Respond to customer inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Ensure inventories of aquatic supplies and inventory are maintained at satisfactory levels.
  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office and XplorRec.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and public relation skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of relevant aquatic legislation.
  • Conduct performance evaluations of Assistant Instructor and Swim Instructor Guards cooperatively with the Recreation Coordinator – Aquatics.
  • Provide ongoing support to the entire aquatic team, act as a resource person and leader.
  • Attend all required staff trainings.
  • Maintain all required certifications and ensure they are on file.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and requirements

  • Current National Lifeguard (NL) certification
  • Current Lifesaving Society Swim Instructors certification
  • Current Lifesaving Society Instructors certification
  • Current Examiners certification. Preference given for Examiner-Bronze level.
    • Must be willing to obtain Lifesaving Society Examiners certification within 3 months of start date, and Bronze Examiner status within 6 months of start date if not certified at time of employment.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR C certification
  • Additional Qualifications: High Five Principles of Healthy Child Development certification, Aquatic Supervisor Training certification considered an asset.
  • A current Police Record Check/Vulnerable Sector Check is required immediately after an offer has been made and must be dated no earlier than the offer date.

Hours of work

  • Minimum of 10 hours per week, up to 35 hours per week.
  • Flexible working hours are required as you may be scheduled for evening and/or weekend work.

Pay/Salary
$24.48 per hour
