Position Overview

Resumes are being accepted for the position of Drainage Operator within the Operations Department. Reporting to the Public Works Supervisor, the successful candidate will have a focus on quality customer service and continuous improvement processes. Key duties and responsibilities


• Carry out all tasks associated with storm sewer collection and drainage system maintenance including clearing of blockages, inspection, repairs to catch basins and manholes and installation, inspection and repairs of associated storm structures and piping.
• Operation of the sewer vacuum (Vac-All Unit) in the cleaning/clearing of storm sewer collection infrastructure.
• Comply with all Federal, Provincial and City regulations, policies and procedures and requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
• Remove obstacles hazardous to employees or the public or that interfere with the safe operation of vehicles or equipment.
• Complete daily activity time cards, infrastructure inspection and sewer block reporting forms accurately and completely.
• Immediately report vandalism, mechanical difficulties and damage.
• Perform other various duties relating to winter control of roadways including operating a combination tandem truck with plow and wing and other relevant machinery; manual snow and ice clearing and manual salting and sanding equipment and sidewalk winter control as needed.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications and requirements


• Minimum Grade 12 education is required.
• Experience related to the duties listed above, normally acquired through 1 – 2 years relevant experience operating tools and equipment relevant to storm sewer maintenance and drainage activities. Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• Must possess a valid Class DZ licence with a good driving record. Successful candidates will be required to provide a current driver’s abstract prior to their start date to confirm their license is held in good standing and that it has not been suspended or revoked under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) or Criminal Code of Canada in the last 5 years. The City of Guelph will take into consideration the number of demerit points and/or nature of the infractions to determine if it meets our requirements.
• Experience operating a sewer Vac-All unit would be an asset.
• Must have a good working knowledge of the city’s storm water collection system and storm sewer and drainage maintenance activities.
• Must have working knowledge of Book 7 Traffic Manual and the ability to set up traffic work zone to perform infrastructure repairs.
• Ability to perform a variety of physical activities including but not limited to lifting, digging and shoveling, ladder climbing and the ability to actively participate in daily maintenance activities, working within live traffic conditions and adverse weather conditions.
• Must possess good oral and written communication skills.
• Have the ability to deal with the public in a cordial manner and work well in a team environment.
• Must have the ability to operate a variety of small tools and equipment.
• Must be a reliable self-starter, able to make decisions and function with minimum supervision.
• Proven basic understanding of and experience with computers as it relates to this position.
• Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
• A satisfactory Police Record Check (including vulnerable sector screening) would be required at time of offer.

 

Hours of work


Any eight (8) consecutive hours between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and between 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Fridays. Winter Control and Standby/on-call may be a requirement of this position.


Pay/Salary


CUPE 241 Grade 3: $31.60 per hour
