Position Overview

Resumes are being accepted for the temporary position of Market Square Assistant at Market Square in the Culture and Recreation Department. The successful candidate will have a focus on quality customer service for residents and visitors who are visiting the Civic Precinct facilities. Guided by the goals and objectives of the City of Guelph Corporate Strategic Plan and committed to the Corporate Values of integrity, service, inclusion, wellness and learning, the candidate will aid in the achievement of the Community Vision for an inclusive, connected, prosperous city.


Key duties and responsibilities

  • Perform ice, and events program duties in the maintenance and operation of the Market Square.
  • Operate an ice re-surfacer and associated equipment to maintain the ice surface.
  • Recognize potential accident causes and watch out for and eliminate them.
  • Event conversion tasks such as stage & riser assembly, chair sets & strikes as well as various tasks associated with event presentation.
  • Snow control of the Market Square and salting sidewalks and walkways.
  • Comply with City regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Immediately report vandalism, mechanical difficulties, damages, etc.
  • Maintains facility quality and safety by adhering to predetermined building operating standards.
  • Acts as a resource person to Market Square customers and staff.
  • Communicates with team members using schedules and co-ordinating equipment requirements.
  • Reports and follows up on all Market Square incidents.
  • General housekeeping duties such as sweeping, mopping, shovelling, cleaning, garbage pickup, and restocking of supplies.
  • Aids in the preparation of statistical information of building and/or facility use.
  • Maintain building and systems records including but not limited to refrigeration checks.
  • Comply with City regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Immediately report vandalism, mechanical difficulties, damages, etc.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications and requirements

  • Experience related to the duties listed above, normally acquired through the completion of a Grade 12 diploma and 3-6 months experience maintaining ice and operating an ice re-surfacer. Candidates with equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • A valid Class G drivers licence with a good driving record. Successful candidates will be required to provide a current driver’s abstract prior to their start date to confirm their licence is held in good standing and that it has not been suspended or revoked under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) or Criminal Code of Canada in the last 5 years. The City of Guelph will take into consideration the number of demerit points and/or nature of the infractions to determine if it meets our requirements.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid First Aid/CPR Certificate.
  • Must have a working knowledge of mechanical and refrigeration systems.
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Health and Safety Act.
  • Working co-operatively with other team members.
  • Excellent customer service skills along with good communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
  • Must be able to perform physical work (e.g., lifting, climbing, walking, etc.), and able to work in confined spaces.
  • Must be a reliable self-starter, able to make decisions and function with minimum supervision.
  • A certified ice technician and/or valid forklift operator’s licence would be an asset.


Hours of work
Any five (5) consecutive shifts 8:00am to 4:00pm or 3:00pm to 11:00pm, Sunday through Saturday. Shifts are a requirement of this position. The anticipated start date will be December 2025.


Pay/Salary
CUPE 241 Grade 1: $28.31 per hour
