Position Overview

Resumes are being accepted for the temporary position of Communications Coordinator within the Strategic Communications and Community Engagement department. The successful candidate will apply their knowledge and experience to support City communications by implementing multi-faceted, integrated communications plans. Guided by the goals and objectives of the City of Guelph’s strategic plan and committed to the Corporate Values of integrity, service, inclusion, wellness and learning, the candidate will help build an inclusive, connected, prosperous city where we look after each other and our environment.


Key duties and responsibilities

  • Support the Strategic Communications and Community Engagement team by implementing tactics in support of recurring programs and services and approved communications plans.
  • Provide tactical communications expertise and support including writing, editing, posting and sending news releases and public notices, developing and scheduling social media content, coordinating design requests and collateral production, booking print and digital advertisements, and supporting the department with day-to-day deliverables including traditional and social media monitoring.
  • Analyze the effectiveness of traditional and social media efforts, report on results and provide recommendations for improvements.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications and requirements

  • Experience related to the duties listed above, normally acquired through the completion of a post-secondary program in Public Relations, Corporate Communications or a related discipline with a minimum of 1-2 years of experience in the field of communications. Candidates with equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience using digital communications tools including writing for the web and social media, and experience using related platforms (e.g., Wordpress, Facebook, Instagram, Meta, Twitter, Tweetdeck, Hootsuite, Google Maps, Google Ads, and Canva).
  • Experience booking ads (print and online) and managing collateral production.
  • Ability to write engaging and creative content in plain language for a variety of audiences and channels.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Above average organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and balance multiple assignments with competing deadlines, sometimes with short notice.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office 365 including Outlook, Teams and Word, and using styles and templates.
  • Knowledge of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) is an asset.
  • Experience working in municipal government is an asset.
  • Professional membership with CPRS and/or IABC is an asset.

 

Hours of work
35 hours per week; Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Evening and weekend hours may be required on occasion. Participation in an on-call rotation may be part of this role. This position is eligible for hybrid and flexible work arrangement options (as per current corporate policy).
