Position Overview

Resumes are being accepted for the position of Arts Program Facilitator and Instructor in the Recreation Department. Reporting to Supervisor of Recreation Programs, the Art Facilitator is responsible for planning, delivering, and evaluating Pottery and Arts programming for children, youth, and adults. Guided by the goals and objectives of the City of Guelph Corporate Strategic Plan and committed to the Corporate Values of integrity, service, inclusion, wellness and learning, the candidate will aid in the achievement of the Community Vision for an inclusive, connected, prosperous city.


Key duties and responsibilities

  • Develop and implement art curriculum and lesson plans.
  • Develop and implement pottery classes and lesson plans.
  • Teach fundamental art techniques and concepts.
  • Guide students in exploring various art mediums and styles.
  • Stay updated with the latest art trends and educational techniques.
  • Inspire and motivate students to pursue their artistic interests.
  • Encourage students to experiment and express themselves creatively.
  • Collaborate with other educators and staff.
  • Demonstrate safe and effective use of ceramic tools and equipment.
  • Provide individualized instruction and feedback to participants of all skill levels.
  • Load/unload kilns and monitor firing schedules.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe studio environment.
  • Support studio events, exhibitions, and open studio hours.
  • Schedule staff and volunteers to ensure smooth program delivery.
  • Promote programs through community outreach and social media.
  • Monitor inventory and order supplies as needed.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain studio equipment including wheels and kilns.
  • Maintain a safe and orderly classroom environment.
  • Manage classroom supplies and materials.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications and requirements

  • Experience related to the duties listed above, normally acquired through the completion a 2-3 year post-secondary education in Fine Arts, Ceramics, Art Education, Education or related field, and minimum 2 years’ experience including development and facilitation of pottery or other fine arts programs within educational settings, industry knowledge in various art mediums (painting, sculpture, mixed media, textile etc.), and studio work coaching and mentoring diverse audiences.
  • Excellent customer service skills with sound judgment and decision-making abilities.
  • Knowledge and experience in delivering programs through Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion lenses.
  • Leadership skills with the ability to provide effective work direction, training, guidance, and support to staff.
  • Skills in program evaluation, improvement, and enhancement.
  • Strong time management and the ability to manage multiple classes, assignments, and administrative tasks.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage with all levels of staff, stakeholders, and the public.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders to create meaningful, relevant, and inclusive program offerings.
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other applicable regulations.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid CPR/AED/First Aid certificate.
  • A satisfactory police record/vulnerable sector check will be required at the time of job offer.

 

Hours of work
35 hours per week, Monday to Friday between the hours of 7:00am – 5:00pm.


For the purpose of special events, community outreach, public facility bookings and program registrations, employees may work alternate hours including evenings and weekends.
